Blog Post #5: Independent Reading Book

In my independent reading book, The Diary of Anne Frank, by Anne Frank, did Anne ever get used to life in hiding? In the beginning of the story, Anne was having a little bit of a hard time getting used to being trapped in the annex. She had to be vey quiet all the time and couldn't move around very much. At the point that I am at in the book now, Anne, her family, the Van Daan's, and Mr. Dussell have been hiding in the secret annex for approximately two years. Now, Anne wants nothing more than to get out of the annex and be free again, but she is also used to this environment and her daily routine. She is used to getting up early, sitting around and writing in her diary or reading all day, and eating whatever she is served without complaining, even if the food served is not a favorite of hers.
In the beginning of the book, Anne was having a hard time getting used to life in the annex. It was very small and secluded. Anne couldn't make a lot of noise because the Frank's were afraid that the warehouse staff would hear them and turn them in. She also couldn't open the curtains or turn on any lights because they were afraid that the neighbors would see them. On top of all of that, they didn't have very many visitors. For example, one of the few people to visit the Jews hiding up in the annex was Mr. Kleinman, one of the office staff. These conditions were hard for Anne to get used to because before the Nazi's invaded Germany, Anne was free to do pretty much whatever she wanted, such as go to the park and play with her friends. Now she is basically a prisoner.
At the point in the book that I am up to now, Anne is used to life in the annex, but wishes for the hard times to come to an end so that she can go back to living the life that she once took for granted. I feel bad for Anne when she is in this situation because I would probably go crazy having to be quiet and still for two years! I also feel bad for her when she is in this situation because she can't entertain herself in many ways besides reading and writing in her diary, plus, I don't think that I could live on the food that they ate.
In conclusion, in the beginning of the story, Anne was having a hard time getting used to her new way of life in the annex, but towards the middle of the story, Anne has learned to accept her life in hiding, and prays for all of the Jews suffering to end soon. I hope that in the in the end of the book, Anne will look back on her days in hiding as an adventure rather than a punishment.
